Medicine Circles x SiSikwan Rattle Making Workshop:

Nov 13, 2025

November 6, 2025 | Medicine Hat, Alberta

On November 6th, Matriarch Movement hosted our SiSikwan Rattle Making Workshop x Medicine Circle at the Medicine Hat Esplanade’s Studio Theatre – a powerful evening of creation, connection, and ceremony rooted in Northern Cree teachings.

The event welcomed Indigenous women, girls, Two Spirit, and non-binary participants into a circle of learning and healing. Guided by Knowledge Carrier Brenda Francouer and her helper Doug Johnson of WhiteBear Creations and Elder and Knowledge Carrier Clare, the evening flowed through prayer, a sharing circle, storytelling, and hands-on creation.

Participants were invited to craft their own SiSikwan (rattle) led by Brenda and Doug – learning about its sacred role and responsibility and what it symbolizes. The workshop wove together the Seven Sacred Teachings and the Medicine Wheel.

The Flow of the Evening

The evening opened with a smudge and prayer led by Shayla, followed by teachings from Brenda and Doug on the significance of rattles in Cree culture. With gentle guidance and shared laughter, participants shaped, filled, and stitched their own rattles – each one carrying its own unique sound and story.

The circle concluded with a sharing circle and traditional song and teachings led by Clare (Kihew Missatim Iskwew / Eagle Horse Woman), who shared her wisdom as a healer and long-time facilitator of sharing circles. Her songs and energy filled the space with warmth and esonance, reminding everyone of the power of creation and community healing.

The evening closed in gratitude, with reflections from Laurie and Shayla, Founder and Host of Matriarch Movement, who spoke about how these gatherings serve as both ceremony and medicine – reconnecting us to the teachings, language, and ways of knowing that have always guided our people.
