On May 4th 2024, Matriarch Movement hosted “Circle of Sisters: A Day of Empowerment” at the Fort Garry Hotel on Treaty One Territory in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This special one-day wellness event brought together 50 Indigenous women, two-spirit, and gender-diverse participants to honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two Spirit people (MMIWG2S+) across Canada, in anticipation of National Awareness Day for MMIWG2S+ on May 5th.

The day began with a warm welcome and grounding by Gramma Geraldine Shingoose, setting a respectful and reflective tone. The Honorable Nahanni Fontaine, followed with inspiring remarks, acknowledging the significance of the day and the ongoing need for awareness and action on MMIWG2S+ issues. Shayla Stonechild then introduced the purpose and vision of the Matriarch Movement and highlighted the importance of collective healing and empowerment.

Workshop One: Wahkohtowin – Weaving Generational Wellness:

Led by Shayla Stonechild, this workshop took participants on a transformative journey that began with partnered meditation and active breathwork, fostering a deep connection to the land and each other. A yoga flow inspired by the medicine wheel followed, emphasizing the importance of generational wellness. The session concluded with a powerful sharing circle, where participants reflected on their experiences and made collective calls to action for continued healing and support.

Workshop Two: Sakihitowin – Connection to Love

Facilitated by Lee Mae Spence, this workshop guided participants through a gentle journey of reconnecting to the endless flow of sakihitowin (love) within and around them. Lee introduced five everyday breathwork practices designed to energize, ground, and soothe the nervous system, particularly benefiting awasisak (children) and youth. The exercises emphasized the importance of nurturing love and resilience in all stages of life.

A nourishing lunch was provided by the Fort Garry Hotel, allowing participants to rest and connect with each other. This break was an opportunity to share stories, build community, and reflect on the morning’s activities.

Workshop Three: Mashkiki – Drawing Strength from the Earth:

Sarah-Anne Tourond led the third workshop, focusing on self-discovery and the reclamation of personal gifts. The session began with a standing meditation to root participants to the earth, followed by an empowering yoga practice that reminded them of their inner strength. The workshop concluded with a deep relaxation exercise, encouraging participants to allow themselves to be held by the earth, reinforcing the innate connection to the land and the medicine it offers.

Throughout the day, a knowledge carrier, Daphne Sinclair, offered cedar brushing and personal readings, providing additional opportunities for healing and grounding.

The day concluded with a closing sharing circle and prayer led by Gramma Geraldine Shingoose, bringing everyone together in reflection and unity. Participants left feeling inspired, supported, and more connected to each other and hopefully their advocacy.

The Matriarch Movement team is deeply grateful to all who attended, the speakers and facilitators who shared their wisdom, and to lululemon who made the event possible. We look forward to continuing these vital conversations and creating more spaces for healing and empowerment.
