Content Warning: This episode has discussions around addiction, suicide, and violence.

In the latest episode of the Matriarch Movement podcast, Kairyn Potts (he/him) shares his powerful story of resilience and determination.

As an Indigenous advocate and content creator, Kairyn opens up about his journey from a childhood marked by trauma to becoming a prominent figure in Indigenous rights. His early experiences within the child welfare system and the impact of losing his mother, is why he is so dedicated to advocating for Indigenous children and youth.

Overcoming Early Life Challenges:

Kairyn describes being repeatedly apprehended as a child due to acute threats to his safety, which led to his placement in foster care. These early experiences of instability and loss, including the death of his mother, profoundly impacted his sense of identity and belonging. Reconnecting with his family after being adopted by his aunt, Kairyn began a journey of healing.

Advocacy for Indigenous Representation in Gaming:

Recognizing the power of representation, Kairyn co-founded Neechi Clan, a grassroots initiative aimed at increasing Indigenous visibility in the gaming world. Through this platform, Kairyn and his co-founder Shannon Baker seek to create a supportive community for Indigenous gamers, challenging the underrepresentation in this space and providing a space for Indigenous voices to thrive. With plans for the first all-Indigenous Apex tournament in collaboration with EA Sports, Neechi Clan is a testament to the importance of inclusion and visibility.

Addressing Systemic Issues in the Child Welfare System:

Kairyn sheds light on the disproportionate number of Indigenous youth in the child welfare system, highlighting the systemic failures that contribute to this crisis. He passionately advocates for better support and resources for Indigenous families, emphasizing the need for systemic change to prevent the ongoing displacement of Indigenous children. His personal experiences fuel his commitment to this cause, making his voice a powerful force for change.

The Challenges of Being a Two Spirit Advocate:

Navigating his identity as a Two Spirit individual, Kairyn discusses the unique challenges he faces, both personally and within his advocacy work. He emphasizes the importance of mental health and community support, encouraging other Indigenous youth to seek help and embrace their identities. Kairyn’s openness about his struggles with addiction and the loss of loved ones further underscores the need for mental health resources and community networks.

Kairyn Potts’ story is one of strength, advocacy, and the ongoing fight for justice and representation. His work with Neechi Clan and his advocacy for Indigenous youth in the child welfare system highlight the urgent need for change and the power of community in driving that change forward.
