On June 21st, 2024, Matriarch Movement hosted a powerful celebration in partnership with lululemon at CIBC Square on Treaty 13 territory in Tkaronto.

This National Indigenous Peoples Day event brought together 50 participants to engage in a day of learning, wellness, and community, guided by Indigenous teachings and community.

The day began with an opening prayer and smudge ceremony led by knowledge carrier Luana Harper Shirt, setting a tone of respect and gratitude for the day ahead. This meaningful start honored the land and our collective journey, grounding participants in a shared space of connection. Traditional songs performed by Fola Kortee followed, whose music resonated, enhancing the sense of kinship and cultural appreciation.

Throughout the day, the vibes were curated by DJ KEHIW, who provided a vibrant and uplifting soundtrack that complemented each activity and fostered an empowering and inclusive environment.

Shayla led a partnered meditation, inviting participants to offer gratitude to the land and each other. This practice fostered a sense of unity and mindfulness, reminding everyone of the importance of being present and connected to the earth and each other. The meditation was complemented by a hatha vinyasa yoga session, blending physical movement with spiritual reflection, embodying the holistic approach to wellness that Matriarch Movement advocates.

A highlight of the event was the “How to Pow Wow Dance” workshop led by Deanne. Accessible to all levels, this session provided a unique opportunity to learn about the history and significance of Pow Wow dancing. Deanne shared personal stories, enriching the experience with her knowledge and passion for culture. The workshop was not only an exercise in movement but also a journey through connecting to Creator.

The day concluded with a delicious meal provided by Dashmaawaan Bemaadzinjin (They Feed the People). Indigenous vendors, including “aaniin hello” and “Adrienne’s moccasins”, were also present, showcasing the creativity and entrepreneurship within Indigenous communities.

Before the event came to a close, Rosary Spence shared a couple of traditional songs, creating a powerful and moving conclusion to the day. Leaving everyone with a sense of inspiration.

In a sharing circle at the end, many participants expressed that this was their first time learning from Indigenous wellness facilitators and that they felt incredibly welcomed and included. This feedback amplifies the importance of Indigenous-led wellness spaces, where the wisdom of Indigenous cultures is shared and honored.

Indigenous-led wellness spaces are vital for fostering understanding, respect, and healing. They offer everyone, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, the chance to learn from the deep knowledge that Indigenous cultures hold about wellness, community, and the land. These spaces promote cultural exchange and foster allyship, helping to build bridges between communities and create a more inclusive and empathetic society.

Matriarch Movement is committed to continuing collaborations like this, making events accessible to all and amplifying Indigenous voices in wellness. We look forward to future partnerships with lululemon and other allies as we work together to create spaces where everyone can learn, heal, and grow.

Stay tuned for more events, and join us on this journey toward collective wellness and understanding.
