The relationship between beadwork, tradition, and the future of Indigenous fashion. (Ft.Jori Brennon)

Sep 23, 2024

In this episode of the Matriarch Movement podcast, host Shayla Oulette Stonechild sits
down with Jori Brennon, a talented Plains Cree and Two-Spirit bead artist who grew up
in Ministikwan Lake Cree Nation. Jori shares his journey into the world of beadwork,
recounting how his mother first taught him the importance of incorporating “spirit beads”
into his designs to acknowledge imperfections.

Jori explains the deep cultural significance and intentionality behind beadwork for many
Indigenous artists. He emphasizes how the practice allows him to feel more connected
to his heritage, while also being a meditative process that requires the artist to be in the
right mindset.

As the conversation progresses, Jori discusses his evolution as an artist, moving
beyond traditional beaded pieces to incorporating his skills into modern fashion designs
like handbags and clothing. He is particularly passionate about creating beaded
accessories that challenge gender norms, such as his series of earrings inspired by
drag queen fashion.

An important part of Jori’s artistic process is ensuring he honors the traditions of his
Plains Cree background, while carefully avoiding the cultural appropriation of styles and
motifs from other nations. He speaks to the importance of maintaining that integrity,
even as he draws inspiration from diverse Indigenous communities and designs.
Jori also opens up about his identity as a Two-Spirit artist, and how that informs the
storytelling and exploration of gender roles that is central to his work. He shares how
claiming that part of his identity was a journey, but one that has deeply influenced his
creative vision and desire to use his platform to educate and empower other Two-Spirit
youth.

Looking to the future, Jori expresses his goals of launching his own ethical clothing line
that prominently features his beadwork, moving beyond the perception of Indigenous art
as just “crafts” and into the realm of high fashion. He also highlights up-and-coming
Indigenous beadwork artists, like Antelope Woman Designs, who are pushing the
boundaries of the medium in innovative ways. As well as Naomi Glasses and her
ongoing collaboration with Ralph Lauren.

Throughout the conversation, Jori’s passion, creativity, and commitment to honoring his
heritage shine through. His story provides valuable insight into the depth and artistry of
contemporary Indigenous fashion and design.
